Acorn & Leaf – Linda

What inspired you to start your business?
We started our little company about 4 years ago when our oldest was just born. At the time there were no bandana bibs around so I started making them myself. Soon I started making them for other mums and stores across Canada. From there our little family run company was born.
How do you maintain a successful work-life balance?
To maintain a work-life balance I try my best to keep evenings and weekends just do family. It can be extremely hard at times, but family is key. We are often spending our time in the mountains hiking which also helps to connect.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
There have been so many things that I count as accomplishments that I cant just pick one. From our revamp, to designing our products, packaging and prints, to supporting such great causes like (Adele’s Over the Rainbow Baskets), Meeting so many amazing moms and lady bosses, to seeing our goods on TV and sported by a celeb’s babe, to having our goods sold by so many independent retailers. It’s been great experience with A LOT of hard work. It’s great to see it all come together.
Who inspires you & keeps you going when times get tough?
Oh goodness! Another great question where I just couldn’t pick one. I have a network of people who I go to for advice. My husband for one, who is in this biz with me, to my mom who gets the creating side with me, then there is my dear friend Chrissy at Modern Barn whom I talk with daily about EVERYTHING. I believe it takes a village and so I have many other lady bosses who I message and chat with about a wide variety of things. It’s been amazing to connect with so many great like minded friends.

What inspired you to start your business?
I wanted to meet a need for parents with a quality, well researched and designed product at a reasonable price AND made in Canada.
How do you maintain a successful work-life balance?
This is always a challenge but I have hired some casual help over the last few months and this allows me to spend fewer Evenings and weekends on business. I also make sure I regularly take time for me – maybe a hot bath, having a plate of wings and drink with my hubby, doing activities with my kids that require my full attention – and turning my phone off for these things!
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
It is always my customer feedback – hearing from parents who love their products, who share stories of how those products have helped their children, those are my proudest moments!
Who inspires you & keeps you going when times get tough?
My tribe – it is large, from my husband, my mom and my friends, but a huge part is my fellow mom bosses – they get it, the whole thing and are the ones I turn to when I am at my lowest.

Prairie Pallet – Breane

What inspired you to start your business?
I started Prairie Pallet while on mat leave with my first baby. The first piece I ever made was a pallet sign for her nursery! Once I was off work and adjusted to having a new baby I found I had a lot of time on my hands- and because I am really cheap I started making signs and home décor for the rest of my home, and then decided to start selling it.
How do you maintain a successful work-life balance?
My business is more of a creative outlet for me than work! But I am fortunate to be at home with my kids, so I usually just work around them! I get most of my work done when they nap or are in bed and stay as busy as I want to be by choosing how many custom orders or markets I will take on.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
Being a part of four markets this spring! It’s the most I have ever done in one season and great validation that people are interested in my work.
Who inspires you & keeps you going when times get tough?
All the other makers inspire me! There is so much creative, local talent out there – if they can make it work, so can I!

RED paper boutique- Gabi

What inspired you to start your business?
RED(Real Engaging Designs) aims to celebrate happiness and human connection so that other’s feel valued and appreciated. We connect people through paper. As mental health nurses, we were inspired to do something creative that made other people feel special. A way to make people feel significant by simply receiving or giving a unique RED greeting card.
How do you maintain a successful work-life balance?
Definitely not always easy. I think balance comes in many forms. It’s not always nicely structured. I think I find work-life balance with the help of a super supportive family including my husband who will always step up to help with anything I need.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
I think my proudest business accomplishment has been having our greeting cards and paper products available in over 80 retailers across North America.
Who inspires you & keeps you going when times get tough?
Definitely other entrepreneurs. There is something super empowering within the community of business owners in Calgary. Whether it’s getting through a tough time or celebrating a win, there’s so many supportive entrepreneurs that are willing to be there for you. To brainstorm creative ideas, to validate the positives or simply to have a glass of wine with. It’s watching other entrepreneurs motivation and drive that continues to inspire me to continue growing RED Paper Boutique.
